At Eisai, we acknowledge how important it is for us to contribute to the sustainability of society, which is why our Environmental Protection Policy ties into our human health care (hhc) + ecosystem (hhceco) mission of empowering people to live their fullest lives. To demonstrate our commitment and help create a more sustainable world, we have implemented various initiatives at our locations in the United States.
Achieving LEED Certification at Multiple Sites
We’re proud to have attained LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification, a globally recognized symbol of sustainability achievement and leadership in built environments, at a number of our U.S. sites.
Our US hhceco Center headquarters in Nutley, New Jersey, our Baltimore Plant and our Biologics Pilot Plant in Exton, Pennsylvania, have each received Gold or Silver Standard LEED certification.
Setting Ambitious Goals for a Greener Future
To earn these certifications, we've focused on using solar and steam power, reducing our electricity consumption from non-renewable sources and setting ambitious goals for the future.
Designing Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Workspaces
When designing our sites, we make sure they align with our global policy and feature cutting-edge environmental, sustainability and governance (ESG) initiatives. We want our buildings to be safe and eco-friendly, so we track key performance indicators to show how effectively we're maintaining a healthy workspace and minimizing energy consumption. This approach was used most recently in the design of U.S. headquarters in Nutley, New Jersey.

Eisai US hhceco Center
At the Eisai US hhceco Center, our Site Services and design teams considered energy usage, water consumption, recycling and air quality when planning and designing the new headquarters.
• LEED® Certification is the most-widely used green building rating system in the world. Created and maintained by the U.S. Green Building Council, it rates the design, construction, operation and maintenance of green buildings, homes and neighborhoods, aiming to help building owners and operators be environmentally responsible and use resources efficiently.
• Fitwel® is a leading certification system committed to a vision for a healthier future where all buildings and communities are enhanced to strengthen health and wellbeing. It was originally created by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and U.S. General Services Administration.
• The WELL Health-Safety Rating™ addresses a range of acute health threats that can be mitigated by facility operations and management strategies. The rating system presents a diverse set of evidence-based strategies that can be customized to an organization’s specific concerns and goals in the short and the long term. It focuses on emergency planning and operations, as well as occupant communication and engagement to ensure awareness and participation in creating a healthy, safe environment. Finally, the rating includes strategies to support occupant and employee health, with a focus on mental health during crises, sick leave policies and community immunity.
Baltimore Manufacturing and Distribution Plant
Our plant in Baltimore is on track to transition its current operations to a more energy-efficient 40,000-square-foot facility, which was LEED Gold certified in 2018. In line with Maryland’s State Climate Solutions Now Act of 2022, the new site is committed to achieving net-zero statewide greenhouse gas emissions and aims to achieve carbon neutrality by focusing on energy conservation, expanding renewable energy including solar panels, supplier initiatives, state initiatives and utilizing new technology.
The Exton Campus
At our Biologics Pilot Plant in Exton, Pennsylvania, we installed a solar panel rooftop system to reduce our carbon footprint. The plant was recognized by the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering as a Facility of the Year winner for sustainability in 2013. In the R&D building on campus, we converted 95% of the lighting to LED to further reduce its energy use. The electricity used on the entire campus is generated by 100% renewable wind power, which is based on the electric contract we signed in 2020. Future efforts will include installing charging stations for electric cars and exploring other sustainability initiatives.
