Caring to Help Others Manual

Caring to Help Others is a comprehensive training manual that helps non-profit community organizations prepare volunteers for the demands - and rewards - of caregiving.

In keeping with our human health care (hhc) mission, Eisai Inc. worked with the following organizations to develop the award-winning manual as a response to the growing need for support for primary caregivers of older adults:
  • AARP
  • Alzheimer's Association - Greater New Jersey Chapter
  • Hospice Association of America
  • Interfaith Caregivers Alliance
  • National Alliance for Caregiving
  • National Association for Home Care
  • The National Council on the Aging
  • National Family Caregivers Association
  • Towson University Department of Gerontology
The manual consists of more than 500 pages of information organized and written in a user-friendly style. Topics include the aging process; age-related health conditions and challenges; the need for sensitivity, understanding and respect for older adults; how to work effectively with a team of family caregivers and professional health care providers; legal and safety issues; and dealing with relationships and the loss of loved ones. It contains several useful tools for trainers, including handouts, exercises, guidelines for recruiting volunteers and forms for record-keeping.

The manual is available free of charge to qualified non-profit organizations with training programs for volunteer support caregivers or plans to begin one. The manual is not appropriate for individual family or volunteer caregivers to use on their own.

Approximately 13,000 copies have been distributed since January 2001. Since the manual became available online, one million visits have been made to the manual's web site.
